How to Go Green at the Office

Green business

One topic that has been at the forefront of our daily lives these past few years is the environment and how our daily activities have a potential negative effect on it. Whether that’s using our electronic devices, leaving the lights on, HVAC in our homes and offices or driving our cars, these all have an impact on the environment.

With that in mind, reducing your carbon footprint is just as important at the office.  Being more “Green” at the office by doing some of the things we mention below helps also reduce costs, But when it comes to the environment, it’s mostly about sustainability. So here are 5 tips to help you “Go Green” at the office.

  1. Be Energy Efficient

One easy tip to keep energy efficient is by using Energy Star compliant office electronics and technology. Often the cost savings over the life of the product will compensate for all or part of the cost to replace them.  Another simple method is to simply switch our devices into energy saving modes, to go to sleep after a certain period, or turn off when not in use. These are all easy ways of saving energy!

  1. Reduce Paper Use & Waste

Printing documents and emails is an easy way to have important things on hand, but we all probably realize that reading it on the screen, while it might take a little getting used to, helps save trees and the energy used to turn those resources into the paper we use. Going digital, printing a single copy to share are a couple of small things that really do help in the long run.

  1. Turn off the Lights!

We all know that light is a basic necessity every day, but if there is bright sun shining outside, do you really need to keep the shutters closed and the lights on? Light uses a significant amount of energy, and by simply turning off the switch, you save a lot of excess! Just open those blinds and let the natural light shine in; it will not only help on excess use and it’s healthier too!

  1. Sustain Healthy Flow of Air

With the air outside being filled with pollution, we need to be careful that it doesn’t creep inside. By using appliances such as air purifiers, as well as just simply opening the windows, you can get rid of some of the contaminants and toxins in the air. Try and avoid bringing aerosols & air fresheners in the office, they contain harmful chemicals that you will most likely ingest once sprayed.

  1. Incorporate Some Green Into Your Office!

It may sound crazy, but even just putting a plant on your desk may change up your whole mood and will also help make the air around you cleaner! Plants thankfully absorb toxins in the air around you, making the environment where you work clean and fresh. Promoting a green lifestyle can sometimes remind you how easy it is to harm our fragile environment. Watering your plant-friend can also help to relieve stress, that is unless you forget to water it.  So go ahead and green up your workplace and while you’re at it, someone else’s too!

What is Storage?

In our daily lives, in business or at times of leisure, the data we create, both consciously and unconsciously goes somewhere.  This simple, or unstructured content is what defines Big Data, and will be the topic of a future blog post. Today’s post is about Data Storage, which the Merriam Webster Dictionary (http://www.merriam-webster.com/) defines as the act of putting something that is not being used in a place where it is available, where it can be kept safely, etc.”

Whether it is for your own personal use in music and picture storage, or in business making sure critical data is organized safely and efficiently, mass storage is the most critical component of pretty much everything we use and touch.  It’s also the one aspect we’d never think about in the majority of our interactions with it.

So then, what defines all of this storage and how is it that we don’t have to think more about it? In simple terms, it’s because the providers of the things we use like email, social media, online banking, and cloud based storage, etc. do it for us, with a little help that is along the way.  That little help comes from how we do things like setup folders in our email, how we organize our pictures and friends on social media, etc. It also comes from structuring the data via databases or other methods.

Each of the hyperlinks embedded above (and a couple below) can lead you to endless definitions, explanations and yet more and more data… on data.  So we won’t bore you by going into any more detail than we already have.  Suffice it to say; ensuring the High Availability of the data is what HighVail does every day. That being said, we want you to get the most out of the technology we provide, helping you find what fits best for your needs and requirements.
